Josef Fares Cheers for GTA 6 to Beat His Own Game in GOTY Race

The hype surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI is reaching unprecedented levels, and even some of the industry’s most celebrated developers are weighing in on its inevitable dominance. One of them is Josef Fares, the outspoken founder of Hazelight Studios, who has taken a refreshingly humble stance—actively hoping that GTA 6 will outshine his own game when it comes to 2025’s Game of the Year discussions.

During a recent interview with the YouTube channel MinnMax, Fares was asked about his studio’s latest title, Split Fiction, and whether he believes it has a shot at winning Game of the Year in 2025. His response? “Not if GTA VI comes out,” he quipped with a smile.

Fares’ comment reflects a sentiment shared across the gaming industry—GTA 6 is the juggernaut that no game wants to go head-to-head with. Ever since Rockstar Games dropped its first trailer, speculation about its release has been rampant. While the studio has slated it for a 2025 launch, history suggests that delays are always a possibility. Even so, Fares seems to believe that the game might just land this year after all.

Given Rockstar’s track record, GTA 6 will likely redefine open-world gaming, and it’s no stretch to imagine it sweeping up Game of the Year awards across the board.

Look, Fares is a passionate bro. He’s as direct and forthcoming as anyone can be. Check out when he says “F the Grammys” to a riled up crowd.

If GTA 6 does make it out before the end of 2025, it will undoubtedly be the game to beat. That being said, the gaming industry thrives on surprises. Games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Elden Ring have proven that, even in the face of big-budget franchises, creativity and innovation can still take center stage.
