Although fear is subjective to some degree, we feel there are three horror games that stand a bit above the rest. At the very least, these are must-play slasher games ripe with bloody graphics, creepy audio, and of course, freakishly terrifying jump scares. We have a top gaming jump scares article, also, if you wanna check that out after.

Silent Hill 2

Developed by Konami, Silent Hill 2 is often considered a top horror gaming experience. There’s a good amount of psychological horror present in this one that keeps you feeling the heevy jeevies throughout.

Silent Hill 2 centers around James Sunderland’s search for his deceased wife. It takes place in Silent Hill, a town that seemingly has a fog issue. There’s some plays with redemption in this one, but it’s a pretty scary play throughout. The plot is complex, so you’ll consistently feel connected and engaged to the game. And you know what that means? Jump scare central.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Created by Capcom, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a return to old school horror experiences. It’s a first-person gaming perspective that at times feels very claustrophobic.

The plot takes place on an old, unkept, Louisiana plantation.

The Baker family plays the antagonists. They’ve been infected by some mysterious dark force.

There’s a variety of jump scares built into sensationally terrific and dark graphics along with bizarre audibles.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Developed by Frictional Games, Amnesia is a first-person survival horror game.

The bad news? None of the players have any viable way to defend themselves.

Players must hide and use wits to avoid monsters while navigating the creepy Brennenburg Castle. The defenseless aspect is a throwback to all the old school horror films from the 1980s where people were on the run.

Other honorable mentions that have been considered top-tier horror games by various communities and critics include titles like “Dead Space,” “P.T.,” “Outlast,” “The Evil Within,” and “Until Dawn.
