The End of an Era: Microsoft’s Shift Away from New Games for Xbox One

“This is the end, beautiful friend, my only friend” – that was Jim Morrison with the Doors. Although the song is old, the sentiment for Xbox One lovers using Microsoft feels a little too true this morning.

Only a mere three years into the Xbox Series X/S gig, Microsoft says it will no longer make games for the Xbox One. Fear not, Microsoft says it will continue supporting the older games such as Minecraft and the likes. But expect no new titles.

“We’ve moved on to gen 9,” Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty told Axios.

The move is a logistical one for Microsoft who fears new, more intricately designed games would get sidetracked by hardware issues. And this is why the announcement isn’t sweeping to old games which don’t pose the same risks given their already developed and, “are what they are,” as we like to say around these parts.

The move helps Microsoft move on into new development without being bogged down by technical issues on new games.

But Xbox recently announced a slew of new titles, including South of Midnight and Clockwork Revolution. And, some developers aren’t thrilled with the announcement claiming that Xbox Series S, a sub-version of Series X, ain’t so great.

Booty isn’t denying that Series S has a little work left, but feels that the team is now free’d up to dedicated all resources towards its improvements.
