Rockstar Takes Back FiveM, the GTA Online Mod it Once Banned

It’s official: Rockstar has swallowed up Cfx.re, the creator of the FiveM and RedM mods. Of course, this is big news given Rockstar once banned the mods. Now it owns them.

The mods were built for multiplayer roles. Rockstar not only acquired the mods, but seems to be embracing their concepts in a statement.

“Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community have found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers,” Rockstar said in a statement. “As a way to further support those efforts, we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the roleplay creative community.

“By partnering with the Cfx.re team, we will help them find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players.”

Is this an indicator of what’s to come with GTA6? We’d say, of course it is.

The mods acquired allow multiplayer experiences that breach the traditional boundaries of the game. Acquiring the mods suggests that Rockstar is changing it’s perception on this facet of the game. Which means not only these new mods will be available, but it could speak to incoming enhancements on GTA6 as a whole.

This probably means that Roleplay will be a huge part of GTA6. There seems to be a hint of future announcements which may include exactly that. So yeah, the announcement is huge.

In essence, Rockstar will now officially expand its policy on the inclusion of role playing mods, as well, it seems to be heading in a different strategic direction all together.
